Why Would You Want One?
Like the previous two versions, this third generation MINI Cooper Convertible is based on its hatchback sister, which means it’s had to grow slightly in size – no bad thing given that need for greater rear seat and bootspace. The electric fabric hood’s more sophisticated too, as are the engines and the degree of media connectivity. And there are also some fashion-orientated options that might bring a smile to your face. It's pretty hard to take exception to MINI's MK3 model Convertible. It brings more space for passengers and luggage, a larger presence on the road and, for the first time, a customisable fabric roof. This goes up or down in 18 seconds and can be operated on the move at speeds of up to 18mph. When the hood’s in place, you can slide the front section back to reveal a 40 centimetre-long opening that’s much like a sunroof. The Convertible body has been reinforced to make it rigid enough to cope with the demands of sporty driving which normally would cause the shell to flex. Two adults can just about fit in back seats that can fold to increase the capacity of the restricted 160-litre boot.

Mainstream models get the brand’s most up to date downsized three cylinder 1.5-litre engines, a 136bhp unit in the petrol ‘Cooper’ and a 116bhp variant in a diesel ‘Cooper D’ derivative. Some buyers wanting MINI Convertible finance may also want to look at the pokier 2.0-litre petrol turbo models, either the 192bhp ‘Cooper S’ or the 231bhp ‘John Cooper Works’ flagship version. All of the models on offer can be ordered with a six-speed ‘Steptronic’ auto in place of the standard manual gearbox.

Here, we’ve a MINI Convertible that’s matured a little, but still knows how to have fun. Sure, some of its extra features – things like the ‘Rain Warner’ and the ‘Always Open Timer’ – can seem a little gimmicky but they’re fun, and isn’t that just the point of a car like this?
